3 A.M., rain on the dead-hours store. Doing his nightly count of the steaming oden pot, Kaito tallies nine simmered pieces where there should be exactly eight — one extra item is floating in the broth that he never put there and cannot name. Unable to sell a thing he can't identify, unable to let the pot's count stay unbalanced before the morning broth-change, and unable to fish the piece out because it keeps sinking and hiding behind the daikon, Kaito declares quiet war on one egg and spends the entire dead shift trying to remove the extra one before dawn, spiraling over how a pot he tends every night could gain a piece from nowhere. All night the ladle dips to the identical dead-eyed beat of the piece slipping away as he mutters '...missed.' A ladder of night-shift regulars each name it differently and none can be verified — the tracksuit regular says it's always been there, a drunk salaryman insists it's the lucky one and demands to buy it, a cheerful jogger swears the pot is basically empty. Rin quietly livestreams the whole vigil as 'Kaito vs Oden,' with one flicker of near-sincerity — that he's the only person alive who'd guard a soup like it's a life — before raising her phone again. Near dawn, hollow and defeated, Kaito finally stops chasing the piece and, serene, lifts the ladle just to skim the pot clean — and catches it at last, the running beat inverting into pure elation as he lifts one plain egg free. Then the reveal Rin planted in the first minute pays off: she dropped one extra egg into the pot on camera at ten o'clock just to watch how long the count would haunt him, so the mystery was hers the entire time. Unable to bear letting his hard-won egg go to waste, Kaito moves to eat it — and Rin plucks it and bites it on camera. 'Kaito vs Oden — six hours' hits four hundred thousand viewers; Kaito gets nothing, not even the egg. Dawn light fills the spotless store exactly as the night began — and Kaito's first count of the fresh pot comes up one over again, Rin's phone already raised, already live.

Page 1 (splash panel). A wide establishing shot of a quiet Japanese convenience store in the dead of night. Rain streaks the dark windows; the street beyond is empty. At the hot-food counter a large rectangular stainless-steel oden pot steams gently, its compartments full of pale simmered pieces — eggs, daikon rounds, triangular konnyaku and fish cakes on sticks — in brown broth. Behind the counter stands Kaito (32, messy black hair, tired eyebags, light shirt under a dark striped store apron, name tag KAITO), calmly holding a long ladle over the pot with faint contentment. Kaito (thought): "3 A.M. Rain. Nobody coming." Kaito (thought): "The best part of the night."

Page 2 (three panels). Panel 1: Kaito leans over the steaming oden pot, lifting the pale pieces apart with his ladle, tallying under his breath. Kaito: "...six. seven. eight." Panel 2: A tight close-up on the pot surface. The ladle nudges the pieces apart, and one extra pale piece bobs up among the eggs and daikon rounds. Kaito: "...nine." Panel 3: Kaito freezes mid-motion, his eyes narrowing to a flat deadpan stare, ladle still in hand over the pot. Kaito: "There should be eight."
Page 3
Page 3 (single held panel). Kaito stares hard down into the steaming oden pot, his tired face faintly mirrored in the dark broth, one pale piece bobbing on the surface. Rin speaks from off-panel. Kaito: "Something's in my pot." Rin (off-panel): "It's soup. Things are in soup."
Page 4
Page 4 (four panels). Panel 1: Kaito turns from the pot, holding up the dripping ladle earnestly, one pale piece balanced in it. Kaito: "There's one piece too many. I count it every night." Panel 2: Rin (19, small, light bob with dark roots, one earbud, hoodie under a dark striped apron, name tag RIN), half-lidded and bored, starts to raise her phone. Rin: "So? Free oden." Panel 3: Kaito is aghast, both hands gesturing, deadpan cracking into alarm. Kaito: "I can't SELL what I can't name. What if it isn't food?" Panel 4: Rin holds her phone up steadily, filming him over the pot, a tiny smirk on her face. Rin: "Okay. Man versus soup. Going live."
Page 5
Page 5 (two panels). Panel 1 (silent beat): An extreme close-up of Kaito's hand slowly lowering the long ladle toward the steaming broth, a single bead of sweat. No dialogue. Panel 2: The ladle dips into the pot and the extra pale piece slips away behind a daikon round. Kaito's face goes flat and dead-eyed. Kaito: "...missed."
Page 6
Page 6 (single wide panel). The store's sliding glass doors part and the tracksuit regular (tall, shaved head, grey zip-up tracksuit, clear plastic bag of empty cans — the same man as in earlier chapters) steps in from the rain. Behind the counter Kaito straightens up over the steaming oden pot, tense and guarded. Kaito (thought): "...a customer. Not now."
Page 7
Page 7 (four panels). Panel 1: The tracksuit regular (tall, shaved head, grey tracksuit, clear plastic bag of empty cans) stands at the counter, pointing lazily at the steaming oden pot. Tracksuit regular: "The usual. One." Panel 2: Kaito, sweating, hovers the ladle carefully over the pot, deliberately avoiding one pale piece while fishing for the man's item. Kaito (thought): "...not that one. not that one." Panel 3: Kaito hands over a paper cup of oden while glancing back at the pot; the regular peers into the broth. Tracksuit regular: "That pale one? That's always been in there." Panel 4: Kaito whips his head back to the man with a wide, intense stare, ladle gripped. Kaito: "It has NOT. Since when?" Tracksuit regular: "...always."
Page 8
Page 8 (six panels). Panel 1: The sliding doors; a rumpled drunk salaryman (loosened tie, flushed face, jacket over one shoulder) staggers toward the oden counter, delighted. Drunk salaryman: "Ohh, oden!" Panel 2: He leans over the pot, jabbing a finger down at the one pale extra piece. Drunk salaryman: "That one. The lucky one. I want THAT one." Panel 3: Kaito blocks the pot with the flat of the ladle, alarmed. Kaito: "No — that one's not for sale. I don't know what it is." Panel 4: The salaryman is insistent, both palms flat on the counter, swaying. Drunk salaryman: "Everyone knows the extra one is lucky!" Panel 5: Kaito, flat and exhausted, gestures at the empty rainy store. Kaito: "There is no 'everyone.' It's 3 A.M." Panel 6: Rin films in the foreground, deadpan, as the salaryman wanders off behind her. Rin: "Lucky soup arc. Chapter two."
Page 9
Page 9 (two panels). Panel 1: Kaito is alone at the oden pot again, both hands gripping the ladle, leaning far over the steaming broth in tongue-out desperate concentration, his hair damp with steam. No dialogue. Panel 2: The pale extra piece dives under a triangular konnyaku in the broth. Kaito goes dead-eyed and defeated, steam rising past his face. Kaito: "...missed."
Page 10
Page 10 (single held panel). It is 4 A.M. Kaito is alone, leaning over the steaming oden pot under the harsh fluorescent light, steam curling around him and his dark reflection wavering in the broth. Deep, exhausted obsession is settling into his face. The empty rain-streaked store stretches behind him. Kaito (thought): "Where did you come from?"
Page 11
Page 11 (four panels). Panel 1: Rin sits on a stool behind the counter, lowering her phone slightly to watch Kaito over the steaming pot. Rin: "You've been at that for hours." Panel 2: Kaito doesn't look up, methodically ladling through the broth with hollow focus. Kaito: "The count has to balance by morning." Panel 3: Rin's face softens into a small, rare, almost-tender look as she watches him. Rin: "You're the only person alive who'd guard a soup like it's a life." Rin: "...kind of beautiful." Panel 4: Rin snaps the phone back up to film, flat and bored again with a tiny smirk. Rin: "Anyway. Six hours."
Page 12
Page 12 (five panels). Panel 1: The sliding doors open and a cheerful jogger (headband, track top, water bottle in hand) bounces in, bright and wide awake. Jogger: "Morning! Ooh, oden?" Panel 2: The jogger peers into the full steaming oden pot and waves a dismissive hand. Jogger: "There's basically nothing in there. Half empty." Panel 3: Kaito, one eye twitching, gestures sharply at the clearly full pot. Kaito: "It's FULL. There's one too MANY." Panel 4: The jogger shrugs and jogs in place, unbothered. Jogger: "If you say so! Oden's bad for you anyway." Panel 5: Kaito clutches the ladle with both hands, unraveling, dizzy spirals in his eyes. Kaito (thought): "Always there. Lucky. Empty. Three people, three pots."
Page 13
Page 13 (two panels). Panel 1: Kaito grimly strains the entire oden pot, piece by piece, out onto a metal tray with his ladle, counting each pale piece, sweating, teeth gritted with determination. No dialogue. Panel 2: The pale extra piece slides off the tilted ladle back into the broth and hides beneath a daikon round. Kaito goes hollow-eyed and beaten. Kaito: "...gone."
Page 14
Page 14 (single held panel). Kaito slumps sideways against the counter beside the oden pot, the ladle hanging limp from one hand, the steam thinning. The first grey light of dawn shows at the rain-cleared windows. He is utterly defeated. Kaito: "...fine. You win. Stay in there forever."
Page 15
Page 15 (three panels). Panel 1 (silent): Calm and emptied out, Kaito gently lifts the ladle just to skim the surface of the broth clean, a serene faint almost-smile on his face, no longer even trying. No dialogue. Panel 2: The ladle rises from the broth — and there it is at last, the pale extra piece resting in the bowl of the ladle. Kaito's tired eyes snap wide with pure elation. Kaito: "...got you." Panel 3: Kaito holds a single plain pale hard-boiled egg up free of the broth on the ladle, steam rising, triumphant and disbelieving. Kaito: "An egg. It's just... an egg."
Page 16
Page 16 (three panels). Panel 1: Rin (small, light bob with dark roots, one earbud, hoodie under a dark striped apron, name tag RIN) holds up her phone, replaying footage, flat and deadpan. Rin: "Yeah. I dropped it in at ten." Panel 2: Kaito freezes, the plain egg still balanced on his ladle, staring at her in dawning horror. Kaito: "...you what?" Panel 3: Rin turns her blank phone screen toward Kaito, deadpan with a tiny smirk. Rin: "One extra egg. On camera. Wanted to see how long the count would haunt you."
Page 17
Page 17 (three panels). Panel 1: The oden pot finally balanced behind him, Kaito quietly brings the hard-won plain egg toward his mouth — a small, tired, private victory. Kaito: "...mine, then. I earned this." Panel 2: Rin's hand darts in and plucks the egg away; she bites into it, holding her phone up to film, utterly deadpan. Rin: "'Kaito vs Oden — six hours.'" Rin: "Four hundred thousand." Panel 3 (silent): Kaito stands holding the empty ladle, a completely blank dead stare, the steam gone, nothing left in his hands. No dialogue.
Page 18
Page 18 (single wide panel, mirroring the opening). Pale dawn daylight fills the store, the rain stopped and the street bright beyond the windows. The stainless-steel oden pot steams, calm and balanced on the counter, exactly as at the start of the night. Kaito is mid-count with the ladle, his face just beginning to fall — one pale piece too many again. In the corner Rin already has her phone raised, filming. Kaito: "...that's nine." Rin: "Already live."
